For buyers and investors, identifying higher-integrity projects has always been challenging. Multiple initiatives are, however, now underway to improve integrity and bring transparency on the risks of projects.
In this report, we describe the approach of MSCI Carbon Markets to rate the integrity of over 4,000 projects in the global carbon-credit market. The process involves in-depth evaluations of individual projects using a rules-based, project-type-specific assessment framework.
The application of MSCI Carbon Project Ratings for the projects in this analysis also reveals a number of important insights for the global carbon-credit market. Overall, fewer than 10% of the projects analyzed are rated in the AAA-A band. There are, however, some early positive signs of a trend to increasing integrity.
