  • October was a quieter month for new announcements, falling between New York Climate Week (in Sept) and COP27 (in Nov).
  • Most notable was the continuing reaction to the suggestion that the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ) has distanced itself from the UN Race to Zero campaign.
  • This has led to a second consecutive decrease in consensus in the ‘Commitments by financial institutions’ guidance area.
  • Other  updates include the Climate Change Committee's report on offsetting, the FCA's consultation on labelling green investment products and guidance on transition plans from a group of NGOs.

Review of the voluntary carbon market pipeline

The VCM pipeline currently contains 2,641 projects with estimated annual output of 477 Mt/yr. Nature-based and clean cooking projects together constitute around three quarters of the current pipeline. The pipeline has experienced significant growth over the last year (+265 Mt/yr, or +125%) as the rate of additions to the pipeline (inflow) have significantly exceeded rate at which projects move to registered status (outflow). The four main registries have collectively registered 33 new projects per month on average over the last year.
